For a first visit focused on the Temple of Heaven’s main buildings, choose a combined ticket, enter at the East Gate from Line 5, and walk from the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests south to the Circular Mound Altar. Leave through the South Gate. Allow two to three hours, plus your journey there and back.
This is a suggested sightseeing route based on the park’s published layout and official transport information. It suits a regular Tuesday-to-Sunday visit; the historic sights normally close on Mondays except public holidays. If you only want a walk in the grounds, the cheaper park-only ticket may be enough.
From living in Beijing
- Go in the morning. That’s when I like it best: fewer people, and the air feels fresher.
- If you only see one building, make it the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. It’s the one I’d prioritise over everything else here.
What to see
Ming and Qing emperors held ceremonies here to pray for good harvests. UNESCO recognises the complex for its architecture and landscape.
The blue-roofed Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests 祈年殿 is the best-known building. The Imperial Vault of Heaven 皇穹宇, its surrounding Echo Wall 回音壁, and the Circular Mound Altar 圜丘 lie farther south. Visiting them in that order helps you see how the ceremonial spaces fit together.

Which ticket to buy
For the route below, buy the combined ticket / 联票. The basic park ticket alone doesn’t include the three main historic areas.
| Full-price adult ticket | April–October | November–March |
|---|---|---|
| Park admission only | CNY 15 | CNY 10 |
| Combined ticket | CNY 34 | CNY 28 |
Park admission only: choose this for a walk in the outer grounds.
Combined ticket: includes the grounds plus the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Echo Wall and Circular Mound Altar.
These are the published adult prices in Beijing’s official park guide. Concessions depend on eligibility and supporting documents. The Divine Music Administration has a separate ticket; it isn’t part of this core route.
Booking with a foreign passport
- In WeChat, find the park’s official ticketing account, 天坛公园官方购票平台. Use the city’s official ticketing guidance to identify the official channel.
- Choose your date, visitor-document option and the ticket that covers the sights you want. Enter your name and document details as requested by the platform.
- Save the ticket QR code offline and bring the original identity document used to book.
No WeChat, or an online booking that won’t work?
Use the on-site ticket office or comprehensive service window at the gate as your fallback. The city’s ticketing guide lists these services. For the route below, go to the East Gate with your original passport and ask for the combined ticket / 联票 covering the historic sights.
Show staff: 我没有微信,想用护照购买今天的天坛联票。请问在哪里办理? — “I don’t have WeChat and would like to buy today’s combined ticket with my passport. Where can I do that?”
Bring CNY cash and a physical card as payment options. The parks authority’s 22 July 2025 FAQ describes staff-assisted orders at gate service windows, with cash, Beijing Pass and bank-card payment. It also describes a mainland-phone requirement for the Changyou Gongyuan channel at that time. That doesn’t establish the requirements of every current booking channel: accepting passports doesn’t by itself confirm that foreign-number registration or payment will work.
The gate window is a practical alternative to getting the app working; it doesn’t reserve capacity for you. On a busy date, allow time to buy the ticket before the historic sights’ last entry. If your visit depends on a particular date and you need a rule clarified in advance, send the date and the booking problem.
If you choose a tour or third-party ticket, check the included areas, meeting point, ticket-collection instructions and cancellation terms. A guided visit and a park ticket are different products.
Opening hours
The park’s Chinese website and Beijing’s park guide give these regular seasonal hours:
| Area | April–October | November–March |
|---|---|---|
| Park grounds | 06:00–22:00; last entry 21:00 | 06:30–22:00; last entry 21:00 |
| Main historic sights | 08:00–18:00; last entry 17:30 | 08:00–17:00; last entry 16:30 |
The historic sights normally close on Mondays, except statutory public holidays. The outer park remains a different visit. For the buildings, choose another day rather than relying on the longer park hours.
Aim to reach the East Gate in the morning, with enough time to finish the route before the historic areas close. Temporary closures and holiday arrangements take precedence over the regular timetable.
East Gate to South Gate: a first-visit route
Plan: Line 5 → Tiantandongmen → East Gate → Long Corridor → Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests → Danbi Bridge → Imperial Vault and Echo Wall → Circular Mound Altar → South Gate.
- Take Line 5 to Tiantandongmen / 天坛东门. Beijing’s visitor guide directs visitors to Exit A for the East Gate. Follow station signs towards 天坛公园东门; the official English guide doesn’t specify an A1/A2 subdivision.
- Enter the East Gate 东门. Follow the park signs towards the Long Corridor 长廊, then the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests 祈年殿. Use the combined ticket to enter the historic area and see the hall and its terraces.
- Walk south along Danbi Bridge 丹陛桥, the raised ceremonial avenue connecting the northern and southern complexes.
- Continue to the Imperial Vault of Heaven 皇穹宇 and Echo Wall 回音壁, then to the Circular Mound Altar 圜丘. Follow the visitor route and barriers within each area.
- Leave through the South Gate 南门. Save this as your finishing point for an onward taxi or walking route. The Line 5 station where you arrived is by the East Gate, so leaving south doesn’t put you back at that station.
The park’s classic-route pages describe the central sights and Danbi Bridge. This guide joins them into an East-to-South walk; it isn’t a claim that the park publishes this exact entrance-to-exit itinerary.
Time to set aside: two to three hours for the core visit, following the range in Visit Beijing’s trip-planning guidance. Add time for queues, a slower walking pace or extra exhibitions. That range is for planning, not a measured walk or a guaranteed finishing time.

Getting there and choosing your exit
For this route, save 天坛公园东门 as the entrance and 天坛公园南门 as the exit. Pinning “Temple of Heaven” without a gate can send you to the middle of a large park.
If continuing by Line 8 matters more than using the nearest southern exit, walk through the outer grounds to the West Gate 西门 instead. Beijing’s official guide lists Tianqiao 天桥, Exit C for that side. This adds walking after the southern sights; choose the South Gate if you intend to continue by taxi.
Station access can involve stairs. Travellers who need a step-free route should arrange assistance with the metro operator rather than assuming the sightseeing entrance route is accessible throughout.
Before you go
- Bring your booking QR code and the original document used to book.
- Wear comfortable shoes and prepare for time outdoors, including water and weather protection.
- Keep to marked visitor routes and any temporary closure signs.
- Treat evening photographs as views of the grounds or buildings from outside; the longer park hours don’t mean the historic areas stay open at night.
For payment setup, use the Alipay and WeChat Pay guide. If you’re unsure how this walk fits into a fuller day, enquire about an itinerary review with your draft, date and any fixed bookings.
Start with the official ticket options above before comparing the optional third-party bookings below.
Would a guided visit help?
For a walk on your own, start with the official ticket options above. A tour may be worth the extra cost if you want explanations of the buildings and rituals. Compare the language, included areas, meeting point and cancellation terms.
