Sichuan opera in Chengdu: choosing a show

In Chengdu, “Sichuan opera” can refer to a traditional performance, a visitor show featuring face-changing, or a teahouse programme. Choose the kind of evening you’d enjoy before comparing tickets.

Face-changing is one part of Sichuan opera. It isn’t included in every performance, so check the actual programme if that’s what you want to see.

Jinjiang Theatre and Yuelai Teahouse

A July 2026 report from Chengdu’s official information account describes the reopening of Jinjiang Theatre and Yuelai Teahouse on Huaxing Street. It mentions traditional opera excerpts and a visitor show featuring face-changing.

Check the venue’s current schedule rather than relying on the reopening report. Ask about the programme and any language support before booking.

Theatre show or teahouse performance?

Check whether the ticket is for a full production, short opera excerpts, a mixed show or tea with a performance. Check the exact venue, date, start time and approximate length.

GoChengdu also describes other teahouse venues, including Tea House Theater at Eastern Suburb Memory. These are different locations, so match the address on your ticket to the show you want.

What does the ticket include?

Check the seating area, whether seats are assigned, whether tea is included and the cancellation rules. Different seats and programmes may explain a price difference.

If a listing says “English-friendly”, ask what help is provided. English booking instructions, an introduction and subtitles are different things.

Getting to the show

Save the venue name and address in Chinese from your confirmed booking. Allow time to find the entrance, take your seat and get back to your accommodation afterwards.

A meal nearby before the show can make the evening easier than arriving straight from a long day trip. Follow the venue’s rules on photos and recording, and avoid blocking the view for other guests.
