Beijing Capital International Airport is PEK. Beijing Daxing International Airport is PKX. This guide is for PEK: start with the airport code and terminal on your booking.
For a daytime arrival with manageable luggage and a hotel near the subway, the Capital Airport Express is a useful default. If you reach arrivals late at night, have heavy bags or want to go straight to the door, use the official taxi rank. Make the choice after allowing for immigration and baggage collection, not just your scheduled landing time.
From living in Beijing
- I take the Airport Express. It avoids road traffic and it’s the best value, which is why it’s my usual way in and out.
- Changing at Dongzhimen is easy. Expect a walk of a couple of hundred metres inside the station with your bags.
- Arriving too late for the last train? I book a ride-hailing car such as DiDi. The official taxi rank is the other option.
- Ignore anyone offering you a ride. I haven’t been approached at the airport myself, but if it happens, don’t engage. Use the official taxi rank or a ride-hailing app instead.
- First thing after landing: before you leave the airport, check that your phone can reach both Chinese apps (maps, payment, ride-hailing) and the overseas services you rely on.
Where to find help at the airport
Terminal 3 has a Beijing Service counter outside Exit B on the international-arrivals level. Airport information lists help with mobile services, payments and transport. A May 2026 city update also describes assistance with ATM withdrawals, SIM registration and airport bus tickets.
At another terminal, ask the airport information desk for the relevant service point. These are arrivals services; if you’re in transit, establish whether you can enter China before heading out of the transfer area.
Choose your transport into Beijing
These recommendations compare the whole journey, including the last part to your hotel.
| Your arrival and luggage | Start with | Cost and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You can reach the train during service hours, carry your bags and accept a subway connection | Capital Airport Express | CNY 25 per person for the airport line; the city subway costs extra. You may still need a walk or taxi at the far end. |
| You’re outside train hours, have heavy bags, or want fewer changes | Official metered taxi | Fare is per vehicle and depends on the destination, traffic, surcharges and tolls. Direct to the hotel, with no rail transfer. |
| An airport bus stops close to your hotel and its next departure suits you | Official airport bus | Route-specific fare and timetable. Useful for a convenient stop; less useful if it leaves you needing another long journey. |
Late-arrival rule: if you can’t reach the airport train before its last departure, take a taxi or a bus with a confirmed departure. If you catch the last airport train, the connecting subway may already have closed: check that connection at the station or plan a taxi from the city station.
Capital Airport Express: stations, fare and hours
The airport’s rail page lists the following service from the terminals. Times are Beijing time and were checked on 29 October 2026.
| Board at | First departure | Last departure | Where to board |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terminal 3 | 06:22 | 22:52 | Level 2 of the T3 parking building |
| Terminal 2 | 06:36 | 23:10 | Basement level 2 of the T2 parking building |
The fare is CNY 25 one way per person. The airport lists departures roughly every ten minutes. This fare covers the airport line, with a separate fare for a city-subway connection.
Choose where to change according to the line serving your hotel:
- Sanyuanqiao 三元桥: Lines 10 and 12.
- Dongzhimen 东直门: Lines 2 and 13.
- Beixinqiao 北新桥: Line 5.
Use the airport’s current transport page for service notices and the rail map. The published terminal times are train departures, not flight-arrival cut-offs.
A complete rail example: PEK to Chongwenmen
This example suits a hotel near Chongwenmen 崇文门, on Line 5. It shows how to connect the airport leg to a named hotel-area station; it isn’t the route for every Beijing hotel.
- After immigration, baggage collection and customs, follow Capital Airport Express / 首都机场线 signs to your terminal’s station. Use the boarding location in the table above.
- Buy the airport-line ticket at the station. If you need help, show staff 北新桥 Beixinqiao as your destination.
- Stay on the city-bound airport train to Beixinqiao. The airport loop can include another terminal stop; don’t get off there for the city.
- Change to Line 5 towards Songjiazhuang 宋家庄, then get off at Chongwenmen 崇文门. The city-subway fare is additional. Follow the transfer signs and ask station staff if you need help buying the next ticket.
- Use the station exit nearest your hotel, then follow the saved hotel address to its entrance. Choose this route if that final walk is comfortable with your luggage; otherwise, the direct airport taxi is a simpler option.
Before leaving home, save your actual hotel’s Chinese address, its nearest station and the final walking route. That replaces the last leg of this example. Line 5’s stops and direction can be checked on the network map published by Beijing MTR.
Taking an official taxi
The airport’s taxi page lists these pickup points:
- T3: basement level B1, taxi waiting area.
- T2: ground floor / Level 1, middle lane outside Doors 5–9.
Join the signed taxi queue, show your hotel’s Chinese name and address, and use the meter. The airport lists a CNY 13 starting fare for the first 3 km, followed by distance and other charges. That is the starting fare, not the fare into central Beijing. Tolls are extra; night and waiting charges can also apply. Ask for the receipt when you arrive.
For buses, use the airport bus desk or the official transport page. Choose a named stop near your hotel and confirm the next departure before buying. This guide doesn’t quote a single bus fare or a flat taxi fare because neither applies to every destination.
Get your phone and money ready
Save your hotel’s Chinese name, address and phone number offline before flying. With a local SIM, bring your passport and ask the operator to show you the plan’s data allowance, calling and messaging terms, activation and price before paying. With roaming or a travel data plan, connect and open the saved route before leaving the terminal.
Keep access to verification messages sent to your bank or payment-app number. A separate data plan doesn’t replace that number.
Use an official exchange service or a supported bank ATM if you need cash, reading the charges first. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before flying with the payment guide, and keep a card and cash available for the first journey.
Keep your first evening simple
Arriving after midnight? If you want a room as soon as you reach the hotel, ask it to hold the room from the previous night and give your arrival date and time. For example, landing at 01:00 on 12 November usually means asking about the night of 11 November. A booking starting on the 12th may only allow check-in that afternoon; have the hotel confirm the arrangement in writing before paying.
You can send: “My flight lands at PEK at 01:00 on 12 November. I’ll arrive at the hotel afterwards. Which night should I book, and can you hold the room until I arrive?” In Chinese: 我的航班11月12日凌晨1点到首都机场,之后到酒店。我应该预订哪一晚?可以为我保留房间到我抵达吗? Replace the dates and time with yours.
If the payment app fails: keep a physical card and some CNY cash available. If you need cash, use a supported airport ATM or official exchange service before joining the taxi queue. Ask the airport service desk for help if needed; don’t rely on a driver having an international-card terminal. The Beijing Service counters list withdrawal and exchange assistance, but this guide hasn’t confirmed every counter’s overnight hours.
A pre-booked pickup is worth comparing if a named meeting point and arranged vehicle would make the arrival easier for your group. Otherwise, the official taxi rank is a direct-to-hotel option without a separate transfer booking. If you book a pickup, include flight delays, waiting time, luggage and the full fare in the comparison.
For a hotel arrangement you haven’t been able to clarify, send the hotel’s details, arrival time and question before travelling. For an urgent issue on arrival, contact the hotel or airport service desk directly.
