China travel checklist: what to do before you go

Use this for a final check before departure. Tick items as you complete them; the ticks aren’t saved by the site. For the order of preparation and detailed help, use Start here.

Before you go, check holiday dates, save a dietary needs card if you need one, and prepare your DiDi last-four-digits card.

Passport, visa and travel documents

• I’ve confirmed the entry rules for my passport, dates, reason for travel and route.
• My required documents are ready, including any visa or qualifying onward booking.
• My passport is accessible, with a separate copy stored securely.
• I’ve saved my accommodation and travel confirmations offline.

Phone, mobile data and useful apps

• I’ve chosen a data plan and know how to activate it on my phone.
• I can receive verification messages on the numbers my bank and apps use.
• I’ve installed the apps I need and can sign in.
• My first hotel’s Chinese name, address and phone number are available offline, with a separate backup.

Money and bookings

• My payment app shows my card and I’ve completed the checks it requested.
• I have a physical card, its support details and renminbi cash as backup.
• I’ve checked booking names, dates, confirmation status and cancellation terms.
• I have the original identity document used for train bookings and have checked the actual station names.

Use the payment setup guide. China Railway requires the booking identity document; an itinerary sheet isn’t a boarding ticket.

Accommodation and your first airport transfer

• My hotel or host knows my arrival time, including any late check-in.
• I know who will handle accommodation registration; for a non-hotel stay, I’ve arranged it with my host.
• I’ve saved the whole arrival journey, including the last leg to the hotel entrance.
• I have a backup if my flight is late or public transport has finished.

What to pack

• I have clothes for the weather and comfortable walking shoes.
• My documents and essential medication are accessible, with any required supporting papers or import checks completed.
• I’ve packed compatible chargers and adapters.
• My devices are charged and my backup payment method is easy to reach.

One last check before departure

Open your saved hotel address, bookings and arrival route once more. Once the essentials are ready, leave some free time for a longer lunch, a walk or a day when you’d rather take it easy.
