For a first walk in central Chongqing, start with Jiefangbei and Hongyadong in Yuzhong District. Add a riverside stop if you have time. Check the route as you go: Chongqing’s hills and different street levels can make a short distance on a map take longer than expected.

Start with Jiefangbei and Hongyadong

Jiefangbei (解放碑) is the area around the Liberation Monument. Hongyadong (洪崖洞) is a cliffside complex on Cangbai Road, known for its stilted-style buildings, dining and shops.

I suggest starting at Jiefangbei, then heading towards Hongyadong. Use a current map and public pedestrian signs rather than relying on a shortcut from an old travel post.

Finding the right level at Hongyadong

Hongyadong follows the slope of the cliff. Check which entrance and level you need before meeting someone or arranging a pickup: places that look close together on a map may be several levels apart.

If you need to avoid stairs, check the actual access arrangements in advance.

Adding a stop by the river

If you want to continue towards Chaotianmen (朝天门), check the onward route and how you’ll get back. Save the exact riverside point you mean, since the name also appears on bridges and transport facilities.

You can finish after Jiefangbei and Hongyadong if that feels like enough. This is a suggested order of stops, not a fixed-distance walking route.

Should you go during the day or at night?

Daylight can make it easier to find your way. Evening offers a different view of the city, but it can be busier and may change your transport options.

Check current city notices if you’re planning around the lights or a particular event. Individual venues and activities may have charges, even when you’re walking around independently.

Planning the journey back

Save your accommodation address in Chinese and choose a return station or pickup point before your phone battery runs low. Leave time for a meal and for finding your way between levels without rushing.
